Bachelor of Science in Statistics

Go beyond the numbers. Statistics at the University of St. Thomas integrates sophisticated technology with modern statistical methods to solve real-world problems. You will learn mathematical and statistical fundamentals, technological skills for acquiring and managing data and advanced methods of data analysis and visualization throughout your undergraduate career.

Why Study Statistics at St. Thomas?

Statistics is a joint collaboration between the and Departments at St. Thomas. Not only will you gain a strong understanding of statistical methods, but you will also gain technological, communication and critical thinking skills needed to analyze big data. You will be able to take classes focusing on topics like data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, predictive modeling and more depending on your interests and goals. Our graduates go on to work in a variety of industries as risk analysts, bio-statisticians, epidemiologists, data scientists and more.

    You will start by developing a strong mathematical foundation by diving deep into classes about descriptive statistics, probability, inference, predictive modeling and more. You will also foster your computer programming and communication skills while completing electives focused on topics like Bayesian models and biostatistics.

    The Science, Mathematics and Engineering Scholarship is awarded to high-achieving incoming students. St. Thomas offers two full-tuition scholarships and two $8,000 scholarships to top candidates intending to pursue the sciences, mathematics or engineering at St. Thomas.

    On-Campus Jobs and Research Opportunities

    Statistics students have the opportunity to work on-campus as a tutor and/or grader for introductory statistics courses. Faculty within the Computer and Information Sciences Department also hire students to participate in professional research opportunities as well.

    Seminars, events and student-run clubs—the possibilities are endless for getting involved at St. Thomas.

    R Ladies is a worldwide organization promoting gender diversity in the R programming community. They hold meetings every year in the Twin Cities, and our students have the opportunity to attend and engage with the community. In addition, they build their professional network and learn more about their future career field.
    St. Thomas hosts the Applied Probability and Statistics Seminar Series, co-sponsored by the Twin Cities chapter of the American Statistical Association. The ongoing series has not only attracted students and faculty throughout our program and St. Thomas, but industry experts as well.
    Senior statistics majors complete a capstone project spanning a variety of topic areas. Past projects have included the spread of deliberate misinformation in the media and the perceptions of gender in leadership roles.

    Statistics has five primary teaching rooms on the fourth floor and three classrooms on the second floor of the O'Shaughnessy Science Center.
